Railroad tracks in Lost Cove, North Carolina (Yancy County).  This is a view of the beautified part of Lost Cove where tourists like to linger.

The little town was settled before the Civil War by a man named Morgan Bailey. The location of the town is above a river by the name of the Nolichucky River, which is near the Tennessee and North Carolina border. Three houses are still in Lost Cove as well as a cemetery and a very rusted old chevy, which lays dormant.  The town was totally abandoned in 1957, leaving it completely desolate.  All of these images lead to some pretty scary thoughts that are perfect for Halloween season – nothing like getting in the spirit!  With all that said, just how does a town like this get so empty handed?

Here are some contributing factors that have lead to the demise of the little sleepy down.  In 2007, the small area played victim to a fire that wiped out almost everything and one last family left in the year 1957.  Also, there are no railroad stops at all for passengers in this area.  Rough terrain and isolation are also a problem which makes the town not very desirable to locals.  The people of Lost Cove depended on moonshine and agriculture at one time and they made homemade alcoholic drinks that were crafted way back to the year 1898.  Illegal Whiskey was also produced and enjoyed by the locals and some of the drinks were sold to the public, while trade was common between alcohol dealers.

Who is behind that door?  Only an unsuspecting tourist knows!

Tourists find Lost Cove very appealing.  To visit the town you must like hiking as this is the only way those who visit the area can get to it.  Recently, TripAdvisor gave the isolated area five owl eyes to indicate that it is a popular travel spot for all.  Some tourists have been quoted as saying Lost Cove is a “super vacation spot,” a “home within the mountains” and “an amazing campground.”

The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased some of the nicer parts of the cove in the ballpark of 95 acres which has really beautified the area. It is now more lush looking in this part than in the rougher areas.  Autumn views from the lake are breathtaking some say and it goes to show you that a desolate area can be turned around – so much so that the tourist draw is great. Make a date with Halloween and come to Lost Cove for some spooky and historic fun!  You might even see a ghost of the past (or two) on your visit!
