Look Inside This Creepy Abandoned Mansion
Andre Govia, a 37-year-old London-based urban explorer and professional photographer, loves creepy, abandoned buildings. One of the creepiest he has found might be the Round Mansion in Belgium, whose occupants mysteriously left it many years ago. According to Curbed, the family who once called it home fled almost three decades ago. But Govia’s pictures show a house that looks still lived-in, with items strewn about as if that family stepped out for an afternoon and will return any minute.
The Lonely Tricycle
This may be one of the creepiest of Gov.’s pictures. A little red tricycle sitting in a long hallway. Just off to the right, you can see a tall stack of what look like newspapers or magazines. Just beyond that, you can see a cabinet with doors and drawers partly open. Dust and debris litter the floor. This picture perfectly captures the eerie sense of emptiness of the home and implies a hasty scramble out the door for some unknown reason.
A Half-Empty Library
There are still books on the shelves in this room. And right in front of the chair sit a pair of boots. It’s almost as if someone had just set them down, ready to go for a walk in the town. The fan next to the fireplace seems to heighten the sense of claustrophobia by implying a hot, musty environment. But Govia told The Daily Mail that “it was very cold and creepy, heavy damp air and noises from the wind made it seem so chilling.”
The Sad Bear
The children that once lived and played here have abandoned not just the house but also this teddy bear. She sits there in the big chair, frozen in a decades-long lament. “This particular building made me feel on edge and so there was no time to relax when I was inside,” Govia said.
Toys on the Windowsill
Speaking of children, there are more toys strewn about the house. The fact that broken figurines, dolls, and childhood games lie about only add to the creepiness. Consider how lively this house must have been so many years ago.
The Marble Staircase
A grand, old-fashioned staircase still maintains its beauty. But it’s a sad, eerie kind of beauty now. The staircase likely hasn’t seen much use since the 1990s. What a shame it is to let such meticulous construction go to waste. “When people see these photographs,” Govia told the Daily Mail, “they think that it’s a waste of a building and history.” He says he “like[s] this reaction as I always try to capture the ambiance and textures of the location so people can feel what it’s like inside.”
Another Creep Fireplace
Here’s another creepy fireplace, surrounded by personal belongings and memorabilia. The open drawers once again give a sense that the family rushed out of the house without warning.
The Messy Attic
The dark, spooky attic is filled with religious items and what looks to be a Victorian-era stroller. The eye is particularly drawn to the crucifix propped against the wall in the back of the wall. This room almost looks more like an abandoned, crumbling old church than a family’s attic.
