The Most Haunted Library in America?

By David Clarke 3 min read

With the massive amount of haunted or supposedly haunted locations across the United States of America, one of the most haunted states has to be Indiana. And while the state has a lot of hauntings, most of them take place in locations that you would expect or are fairly common for hauntings to occur.

There is haunted cemeteries, haunted bridges, and haunted tunnels. But of all the haunted places in the state, few are eerier than this impressive library located in Evansville, Indiana. Now, with millions of people passing through their doors over the years and all the public records and knowledge they hold, you may expect libraries to be a frequent spot for hauntings. However, this isn’t always the case, but it sure is in Evansville.

This library, which is named the Willard Library, was first opened to the public in 1855 and was actually honored as a National Historic Place in 1972, because of it’s amazing gothic architecture. Everyone who walks by this brilliant building on 21 First Ave is treated to a piece of history. However, if you take a step inside, you might be treated to something else that might just scare you.

This is because the Willard Library is likely most famous for something other than its collection of books or architecture and that is its resident spirit that resides in its halls. The library is supposedly haunted by a ghost that has been nicknamed “the Lady in Grey”. As you could imagine, the spirit is that of a female dressed in grey clothing.

So just who is this lady in grey? Well, it is believed by some that it is the spirit of the founder’s daughter, Louise Carpenter. Legends claim that when much of his estate was not let to her (but to the library) she held a bitter grudge that has lasted long after her death and continues to haunt the location out of spite to get back at her father.

However, many other people disagree with this idea and claim that the spirit isn’t malicious or evil at all. And most of these people believe she is a former staff member of the library and hangs around to watch over her old workplace, not to terrorize its visitors. But as of right now, neither side can claim for certain whether their theory is the right one or not.

Wherever she came from, she can be seen quite frequently throughout the building and she will often play with the light switches and rearrange the books on the shelf. In addition to this spirit, many claim they have seen other things in the library and some of the happenings have even been caught on video.

As you can see, there is definitely something spooky going on in this library. And for being in a state full of supernatural occurrences, this might just take the cake as one of the spookiest. If you ever found yourself in Evansville, would you visit the library?
