For some strange reason, people love to be scared. Whether it’s watching a freaky movie, telling ghost stories around the campfire, or touring haunted houses, we can’t get enough!

The reason we love it so much is likely the adrenaline rush that comes with being truly scared, and if you’re looking for something to trigger that rush then look no further than the Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky.

This haunted sanatorium in Kentucky has tours available year-round, but it’s especially terrifying around Halloween when everything gets amped up because of the reputation that goes along with October 31st.

The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is located at 4400 Paralee Drive in Louisville, and it’s got quite the reputation itself. The name has changed a few times, but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s been an eye-catching number of strange deaths that have happened there.

Sanatorium1

The Sanatorium was founded in 1910 and initially served as a tuberculosis hospital. It was meant to house 50 patients and use state of the art treatments, but the first patients of the facility ended up spending their winter in tents.

The “state of the art” treatments that the facility boasted ended up many of the patients dying from their extreme nature. Some of the patients did appear to improve their condition, but the actual number of people cured vs. people killed is unknown. The Waverly facility officially closed its doors in 1961 when other treatments like antibiotics became more popular.

Sanatorium2

The facility reopened in 1962 with a different purpose and a different name, the Woodhaven Geriatric Center. Alas, that facility was not meant to last either as it closed in 1982 after reports of extreme patient neglect and numerous fatalities. Once it had closed, there were some that considered converting it into a prison, but the idea was never pursued.

Now, Waverly is simply a shadow of what it used to be. It remains open to the public as a haunted attraction, and it often features actors that terrify visitors with their performances. Besides the actors, the stories of murders and suicides of both patients and staff fill the building with a spooky vibe. To top it off, it even has its own graveyard.

Sanatorium4

Some have recently had the idea to turn the Waverly facility into a motel and remodel some of the structure to make it work. Whether or not that idea works out, some overnight stays are currently allowed under special circumstances.
