We Dare You To Pay This Haunted Cemetery In Mississippi A Visit

By David Clarke 3 min read

In the modern day, there are a lot of places in the world that are seen as or considered haunted. And while the spirits who reside there may be spooky, most of these haunted locations wouldn’t be that creepy without the legends surrounding them.

In fact, most of them are just regular buildings, schools or other harmless structures that are made frightening once the haunting stories get passed on and one . But one place that doesn’t even need to be haunted to be scary is a cemetery.

On their own, these locations are literally where hundreds (or even possibly thousands) of people are laid to rest. It is not hard to understand how a place like that can be terrifying. Now, imagine if a location like that ALSO came along with legends of it being haunted. Well, that is exactly the case with the Chapel of the Cross, a church in Madison, Mississippi which has a small cemetery behind it that is apparently haunted by a spirit.

The Chapel of the Cross was completed and finished being constructed in 1855 and was originally part of the famous plantation, Annadale (which was owned by John T. Johnstone). Now, the church itself is really quite beautiful. It adopts a gothic style architecture and features a bell tower, arched entrances and many more typical features found in similar structures. In fact, the church currently serves as a fully functioning church with its own congregation and has also been listed on the National Register of Historic places for decades now. But despite all this, there is no denying the slight creepiness surrounding the church. And this creepiness can likely be applied to the small cemetery behind the church.

While yes, the location and structures in it are noticeably frightening, the fact that the location is also haunted by a supernatural visitor from time to time definitely ramps the creepiness factor up to a 10. The spirit that supposedly haunts the location is that of Henry Vick, who is buried in the cemetery. And the story behind the haunting is an interesting story to tell.

The date was May 17th, 1859 and Henry Vick was a mere four days away from marrying the love of his life, Helen Johnstone. Yes, the daughter of the aforementioned John Johnstone who owned the plantation. However, Vick was tragically killed on this day, less than a week before his wedding. His bride-to-be was heartbroken and actually wore her wedding dress to Vick’s funeral which actually took place on the day their wedding was supposed to be.

Since her death some years later, there has been a multitude of rumors and numerous sightings of Helen’s ghost visiting Henry’s grave and sitting on the bench behind it, decked out in the very same wedding dress she wore to his funeral. If that story isn’t enough to send chills down your spine, I don’t know what is. So the next time you’re near Madison, Mississippi, pay a visit to this historic site, but don’t be surprised to see that you’re not alone.
