Creepy Mississippi Theater Is Haunted By A Terrifying Past

Buildings usually get the reputation of being haunted after they’ve featured some horrible tragedy, and after that, it seems to be host to one strange occurrence after another. Whether or not you believe or disbelieve in the paranormal, some of the suspicious incidents that take place are too strange to ignore.

The Lyric Theater in Tupelo, Mississippi is one those buildings that seem to be haunted by its tragic history, and to this day people claim to witness unnatural phenomenon within it.

It all started in April of 1936 when the town of Tupelo was struck with one of the most severe storms it had ever seen. The whole town was affected by the storm, including the people and the buildings.

The Lyric Theater was impacted but still remained relatively intact, so it was used as a congregating place for those that were injured or dying. As the stories go, that’s why there are so many strange happenings in the theater over the past decades.

The storm that so severely hit the city of Tupelo was an F5 tornado. It spanned 3 city blocks in width and had wind speeds nearing 300 mph. The citizens of Tupelo had no warning of the impending storm.

When all was said and done, the total death toll after the storm was 200. African American names were not reported among the casualties, however, so the actual number of deaths was much higher. Many consider that tornado to be one of the worst to ever take place, even to this day.

Since the Lyric Theater  was one of the few buildings to survive the tornado, it became a hospital of sorts. All of the wounded or dying people were brought to the theater for a safe haven and treatment. The popcorn machines in the theater were even used to sterilize the doctor’s tools before they performed surgeries.

This is where the story starts to get creepy. Many of the bodies of the people that died in the theater during that time were stored in the crawl space temporarily. This lead to the rumors that the ghosts of those who died within the theater’s walls still roam about.

Employees commented on one ghost specifically, naming him Antoine. Apparently, Antoine tends to steal people’s keys and hum loudly. Perhaps people are simply misplacing their keys and the machines are responsible for the humming, or perhaps there’s something more to the story. People claim to have heard Antoine moving about and even moving furniture.

If you want to hear the whole story and find out the truth for yourself, then it might be a fun adventure to take a road trip to the Lyric Theater at 201 North Broadway in Tupelo. The theater is still fully operational so you can even catch a movie! Just beware of Antoine stealing your keys.

Do you think there’s any truth to these stories or do you think they’re simply myths? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
