Check Out These 7 Places in Delaware You Don’t Want to Be After Dark

By David Clarke 3 min read

There is just something about the night time that is inherently frightening. A place that can be full of life and extremely cheerful during the day, can somehow turn nasty. But there are also some places you have to be careful of both night and day.

And no, these aren’t only places in foreign lands, there are plenty places like this, even in the USA. And of all the states, perhaps none might seem as calm, quiet and safe as Delaware. But even in a perceived safe state like Delaware, there are still some places you should avoid both day and night. Here are 7 places in Delaware to either avoid or make sure you are cautious while you’re there.

1. Wilmington

If you are living in or visiting the city with the nickname “Murder City, USA”, you should probably be worried. This city consistently ranked as one of the most dangerous in all the country. It is not only dangerous in the poor area of town either, even the most upscale area of the city can leave you with a high chance of victimization. In a city with this kind of reputation, keeping your wits about you and maybe even traveling with a group is a good idea.

2. Rehoboth Beach

While you don’t often think of a beach as being a dangerous place to be, you’d be wrong in this case. In fact, Rehoboth Beach is actually the number one spot for property crime in all of Delaware, especially in the summer. In fact, during the summer, you have a massive 11% chance of being the victim of property crime here, which makes it one of the most dangerous places out there. While these percentages may be skewed due to the large population, there is still no doubting the place is dangerous.

3. Milford

Delaware3

Milford has the unfortunate record of being one of the only places in Delaware to be in the top 5 in both violent and property crime. This city located in the southeastern part of the state and is one of the most populous in all of Delaware. You have about a 1/20 chance of being the victim of property crime and a 1/100 chance of being the victim in a violent crime.

4. Laurel

Delaware4

This is one of the most shocking on the list, as Laurel is perceived as one of the safest and most friendly cities in the state. But according to data, it is the second most violent city in the entire state. In addition to the violence, property crime is also quite high for what you would expect of this town that normally feels pretty safe.

5. New Castle

Delaware5

New Castle is quite a strange example as it has a much larger area than most cities in the state, which means the crime varies throughout it. In old New Castle you are usually pretty safe from crime, but once you leave the center of town towards the outskirts, you should be worrying about your safety a bit more.

6. Seaford

Delaware6

This is one of the largest year-round cities in the area, and as a result can be very dangerous at times. It is top 4 in both property and violent crimes and being that it has a high population all year round, it can be dangerous at any time.

7. Camden

7. Camden

This is a strange example. Over the past years, poverty has hit the area pretty hard. But even with this, Camden is still among the safest places in Delaware in terms of violent crimes. But property crime is a different story. You have a 1 in 13 chance of falling victim to a property crime here, which is among the highest in the state.
